History of the place

King Rukmangathan ruled this region. Devas picked his garden flowers to offer to Perumal. Not knowing about the Devas, the king's securities arrested them and brought before the King as per his order. But the devas lost their power to return back to their place and wanted the King's Ekadasi fasting benefits in return to get back their powers. The king happily donated his benefits to the Devas. As all these happened within a fraction of second (kadigai), this place got its name "Thirukadithanam." Sahadevan, one of the Pandavas installed this Perumal. When he was about to immolate himself as he could not find an idol, the Lord Narayana appeared instantly before Sahadeva and saved his life. Hence this Lord is named Arputha Narayana (Arputha means miracle). This temple is popularly known as Sahadevan Temple.

It is said that Perumal in the temple acquires fresh energies once in 60 years and merge in the space as a lightning towards the end of Kaliyuga.
