History of the place

Mother Uma playfully closed the Lord's eyes which made the entire universe to a stand still. The Lord advised the Mother to go to this place and do penance to remove the sin. The Mother constructed a lingam out of sand (Prithvi) under a Mango tree and worshipped. Ekam Amram means "A mango tree". This mango tree with its four branches represents the 4 vedas. When Lord Shiva caused a flood as part of his divine play, the Mother embraced the Lingam and protected it. Because of this, the mark of her bangles and her breasts are seen embedded on the lingam. Moved by Her penance, the Lord married her. Hence, the Lord is also known as "Thazhuvakuzhaindha Nathar".
