History of the place

Vasudeva was imprisoned before the birth of Krishna. Knowing that he would be killed by Devaki's 7th child, Kamsa killed all the other children. After Krishna was born to Devaki in the prison, he was taken to Ayarpadi and grew up as a son of Yasoda in Nandagopalan's house. Then He came back to Mathura and killed Kamsa and built a new house in Dwaraka are spoken of as the main history of Mathura. According to Puranas, Mathura was created by Ayu, the eldest son born to Pururava and Urvasi. Some say that the city was named Mathura after the king named Madhu who ruled the region in 1600 BC. Historian Megasthenese mentions that Mathura was called Medora. This area was called Madhuvanam because of its abundance of trees. Later it was called Madhupura which is now Mathura.

Speciality of this temple

Mathura is the birth place of Lord Sri Krishna. The Lord Krishna is called Govarthanesan along with Mother Sathyabama and is in standing posture facing east. The vimana above the sanctum sanctorum is called Govardhana Vimana. In the temple, there is stone fort inside which a stage is there which is said to be the birth spot of Lord Sri Krishna. This stage has a very high ceiling. The history of Mathura shows that this place has been renovated in different ways in many times.
