Lord Krishna was performing pujas in Dwaraka with four idols of Rama, Lakshmana, Bharatha and Satrugna. After Dwaraka was drowned in floods later, Sage Vakel Kaimal got these idols. The Lord appeared in his dream and asked him to install them in places on the banks of Bharatapuzha River. Accordingly Rama was installed in Thiruparaiyar in Trishur district, Bharata in Iransalakuda, Satrugna in Payamal and Lakshmana as Lakshmana Perumal in Thirumoozhikalam. As per another story, Haridha Maharishi did penance here and asked the Lord the east way for the common people to reach Him. The Lord replied that whoever practice the trade assigned to them according to Varnasrama Dharmas can reach Him and handed over the SRI SUKTHI text to the sage that explains the rules of Puja. This event also attributed to the name "Thirumozhikalam" (place of sacred, soft and auspicious words)
Mangalasasanam (hymns) by Nammazhwar and Thirumangai Azhwar. This temple is 69th among the 108 divya desams.
The Lord Perumal is in standing posture facing east. His Vimana is known as Soundarya Vimana. Lakshmana built the tower and mandaps of the temple and worshipped by Bharatha too. The Lord Shiva's shrine here represents the harmony among the two faiths. The temple is located on the banks of Bharatapuzha River in Kerala. When Lord Sri Rama stayed in Chitrakuda during His exile, Bharatha came to convince Sri Rama to be back to Ayodhya. Lakshmana misunderstood Bharata and tried to kill him. When Lakshmana realized his mistake and begged pardon to this Lord, Bharate embraced Lakshmana and spoke kind words. Hence the name Thirukozhikalam (a place of auspicious and soft words)
