King Thondaman got defeated in his fight against the demons Vanan and Onan. When his elephant's legs were caught in jasmine creepers, he cut the creepers and the creepers bleed. He found a Shivalinga under the soil and tried to close his life for the sin. The lord, in a hurry to save the king appeared before him and blessed him. Later, the Lord sent Nandi deva to help the King to win the demons. The king brought two pillars (made of Vellerukku tree) from the demons and built temple.
Sundarar, Arunagirinaadhar. This is the 255th devara sthalam.
The temple's Lord is a Swayambu lingam with a scar on its head. Throughout the year (except for two days in Chithirai month covering the Sadayam star), the lord is covered with sandal paste to heal the wound. It is firmly believed that whoever sees the lord on these two days will be out of their sins. Vimana is Gaja Prushtam (backside of the elephant design) A mercury linga (Padaras linga is placed in a separate shrine for Pujas. There is no shrine for Navagrahas here. The goddess is named "Kodi Idai Nayaki" meaning her waist as thin as the stem of a plant. Praying the Mother on full moon days falling on Fridays will relieve the sins. There are shrines for Cholapureeswarar, Kuchalapureeswarar (worshipped by Lava and Kucha, sons of Lord Sri Rama).
People place their prayers for marriage, child boon.
The garlands offered to Nandi Deva are worn by devotees to solve wedding and health issues. This practice is not allowed on new moon, full moon, Krithika star and pradosham days. The devotees offer sandal paste to the lord once their wishes are fulfilled. Listening to the history of this place would bring salvation to the souls.
