The Lord gave darshan in reclining posture to sages Markandeya and Brugu in Srirangam. Afresh with this darshan, the two sages wanted the same darshan at this place too. Lord gave darshan as Boga Ranganatha in reclining posture in this place and continues to bless from the hill top His devotees. Abishek is not offered to Him except a Thaila Kappu - applying cosmetic oil on the idol - once in a year in Karthikai month. As He is surrounded by water (Neer in Tamil) hence the name Neer Vanna Perumal.
Mangalasaasanam (hymns) by Thirumangai Azhwar and Boodhathazhwar. This is the 62nd temple in the list of 108 divya desams.
This hill temple has two big temples both at the top and at the foot hill. The Perumal here appears in four postures under Thoyatri Vimana as Neer Vanna Perumal - standing (at the foothill), Narasimha - sitting, Ranganatha - reclining and Ulagalanda Perumal in walking (the other three at the hill top) postures. Lord Narasimha blesses here as Bala Narasimha. Lord Rama along with Mother Sita and His brothers gave His wedding darshan to Sage Valmiki and stayed here for people's welfare. Sage Valmiki as a Swayambu appears in worshipping form. When Thirumangai Azhwar could not worship Perumal due to water surrounded, he decided to wait and stayed in the opposite hill for the water to recede and then had the darshan of Lord Rama. Pleased by his devotion, Perumal gave four forms of darshan to him. This temple is one of 8 temples in India which are considered very important and praised as Swayam Vyaktha Kshetras.
Devotees pray for health and clear mind. People also pray for marriage and child boon.
Devotees take bath in the holy tank which is the confluence of four theerthams to cure illness. They tie cradles in the tree for child boon. Also Thirumanjanam and special pujas are done to Perumal and offer vastras. Girivalam (circumambulating the mountain) is done on full moon days for marriage boon.
