Oonan and Kanthan, the army commanders of Vanasura did extreme penance to swayambu lingas here and got boons. Another asura, Jalandran also found a linga and worshipped intensly. Sundarar was moved by the staunch devotion of the asuras and wanted to seek gold for the construction of the temple for the three lingams. As Sundarar starts singing hymns (adimai thiram), the lord made the tamarind fruits to fall into golden fruits and then the temple was constructed.
Sundarar. This the 235th devara sthalam. This place is one of the 5 temples in Kanchipuram that is conferred with devara hymns.
The lord is swayambu murthi. The Lord here appears as Oneswarar, Kantheswarar and Jalandeswarar in separate shrines. The Vayirudaari Vinayagar here grants all boons. The "OM" sound is heard from the Omkaara Vinayagar statue here.
Those who seek wealth can chant Sundarar's hymns about this lord.
