History of the place

Sage Kabila on his pilgrimage wanted to perform puja here as this place was dense with Vilwa trees. The sand here was white as cows voluntarily poured their milk on the sand. He made a Linga out of that sand for his puja. A king's horse stepped on the Linga and it got split. As the sage tried to create another Linga, the Lord and His Consort appeared before the sage and told him to install the cracked Linga itself as the milk in that Ling was given by the Divine Cow Kamadenu.

Saints who worshiped

Thevaram hymns by Thirugnanasambandhar, Thirunavukkarasar, Sundarar and Arunagirinathar. This temple is the 4th devara sthalam.

Speciality of this temple

The Lord Shiva here is Swayambumurthi. The linga is split due to the hit by a horse leg. Shiva and Parvathi are in wedding posture behind the Linga. The Bhairava here resembles as that in Kasi and it is said that the same sculptor did this idol also. And worshipping Bhairava here equal to praying at Kasi. So, Ashtami days (eighth day after the full moon day) are observed with special pujas. People identify this temple more as Bhairava temple. This is yet another place where Lord Shiva gave darshan to Sage Agasthya.

Pariharam

People pray for child boon and to cure diseases due to heat in the body. It is believed that worshipping this Lord with bring prosperity in life.

Pariharam Procedure

Consuming the milk used for the abishekam of Lord Shiva - Lingam is followed here for child boon and diseases cure. Also abishekam is done to Lord Vijaya Vinayak on Sankatahara Chaturti days for success in their endeavours.
