The divine serpent Adishesha (serving as a bed to Lord Mahavishnu) incarnated as Sage Patanjali to have the dance darshan of Lord Shiva. The Lord granted Adisesha His Dance Darshan in Chidambaram. The Lord advised the Sage to do penance in this place. When the Lord appeared before the Sage, he expressed his wish to see the Lord's dance forever. Lord assured Patanjali to offer His dance darshan in many places. To honour sage Patanjali's devotion, the Lord named Himself "Patanjaleeswarar"
