History of the place

Lord Shiva was teaching the meaning of Vedas and Aagamas to Mother Parvathi in Kailash. Her distraction made the Lord to curse Her to be born in Bharathava community. Lord Muruga was angry for this and threw the Vedas in the sea. The Lord cursed him to be born as dumb in traders community. Muruga was born to Thalapathy and Gunasalini in the name of Rudrasanman in Madurai but was dumb by birth. When He grew old, he went to many Shiva shrines seeking relief and was blessed with speaking skills at Erukathampuliyur. As Kumaran (Murugan) worshipped Lord Shiva in the place, as Lord is named Thiru Kumara Swami. There is an idol of Rudrasanma in the temple.

Speciality of this temple

The Sun's rays fall on the Lord from March 16 to 20th. Birth place of Thiruneelakanda Nayanar, one of the 63 Nayanmars. Knowing the sacredness of this place, Sages and Devas thronged this place as birds and trees. The hunters there tried to kill and birds and chop the trees. The Lord cursed the hunters to become Erukku trees not useful to anyone and saved the trees and birds. Hence the name Erukathampuliyur. Rajendra Cholan was born to King Rajaraja Cholan after the latter prayed to this Lord and hence the name Rajendra Pattinam. Suvedhan, a shiva devotee got his leprosy cured after a dip in Erukathampuliyur spring.

Pariharam

People who are dumb and stutter and those who seek child boon pray here. Erukkam plant has the power to cure leprosy.

Pariharam Procedure

Abisheka to the Lord and Ambika is done with offering of vastras. People with leprosy take a bathe in the Erukaththampuliyur spring.
