History of the place

Once, Sage Narada asked Sage Brugu (who has wisdom eyes in his foot and has pride in it) as to whom to worship for the benefit of the humans. Sage Brugu decided to test the patience of Gods to finalise the worthy one. Both Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva failed in the tests. So, Lord Vishnu was smiling with patience when the sage kicked him in his chest and at the same time He plucked the wisdom eye. However, Mother Lakshmi was angry with the Lord as He did not oppose the sage knowing that She resides in his heart and left to earth. She was raised as Padmavathy by her foster parents Akasha Raja and Dharani Devi. Lord Vishnu came as Srinivasan and was raised by Vagula Devi (Mother Yasodha in his Krishna avatar). The Lord wanted to marry Padmavathy who identified him as Lord. But as He had very little money, on the advice of Sage Narada, He borrowed one lakh fourteen thousand of gold as credit for his marriage. The Lord promised to return back his debt with interest from the offerings made by His devotees. So, the Lord stayed at Thirumala and blessed His devotees. Goddess Padmavathy has a separate shrine at Alamelumangapuram. Lord Srinivas comes to Thiruchanur daily and goes back to Thirumala in the morning, according to scriptures.
