A Chola king by name Dinakara suspected his wife's character and killed her and incurred the Brahmmahati dosha (the impact of sin of murder). He lost his kingdom and wandered. One day a dog with skin diseases followed him and it fell in a river and got up healthy. The king too followed the dog's example and got back his kingdom and built this temple on the banks of the confluence of the two rivers and named it Thiru Koodalaiyattrur meaning the confluence of the rivers. Later this temple was dilapidated and idols were lost. Mother Goddess appeared in the dream of priest Ponnappa and told him of Her presence in the river. The priest discovered the idols and built the present temple.

Speciality of this temple

This Lord Shiva is a Swayambumurthy. The Sun's rays falls on the Lord on first three days of Chithirai month. Two Ambika shrines - Gnana Sakthi (kumkum is prasad here) and Para Sakthi (Vibhuti is given as prasad here) are there. Even Sage Agasthya prayed in this shrine for memory boon. As Goddess Saraswathi with Her Lord Brahmma had prayed and got the Nardana Darshan (dancing) of Lord Shiva, hence the name Nardana Vallabeswarar. This is revered as Dakshina Prayag as Manimutharu and Vellaru rivers confluence here. The shrine of Chitra Gupta (the accountant of Yama (the Lord of Death) is here. No shrine for Navagrahas but one for Sani Bhagawan as Pongu Sani meaning prosperity given Sani. Sage Agasthya had a son named Karthi2yanan who became a great Rishi. When Sage Agasthya prayed for a daughter, a girl child was found playing on the lotus leaves in Manimutharu river. The sage brought her up naming Ambujavalli. Lord Vishnu married Ambujavalli during his Varaha Avatara whose shrine is there in the temple.
